50 – Things to do in Cochin / Kochi

When I decided to do a “things to do” article on Kochi; I never thought I could come up with such an exhaustive list. And I know for a fact that even this is not complete! If you know of something that is not mentioned in this post, feel free to add in your inputs in the comments section :)

Cherai

There are so many options one has, to get away from the clamor and clatter of busy Kochi (Cochin). One such place where I retreat is Cherai. About 30 kms from the commercial capital of Kerala – Kochi, Cherai energizes your tired mind with beautiful and picturesque landscape. The pristine sprawling beach, charming lagoons, alluring backwaters, panoply of coconut trees and the gorgeous paddy fields – simply takes your breath away. Such views are the best companion one can have in addition to a book and some music, to refresh your body and soul!

Foot Reflexology

Foot Reflexology treatment centre opens up in Kochi!

Manna from heaven is how I would describe my introduction to Foot Reflexology. While driving around in Kochi, I had seen their promotional boards, however I had never thought of going to the centre until a friend referred me to it. And, am I glad?! :)

* Conditions Apply…a Joke of a Play!!

As one grows in life we all understand that all things that come to you in life have conditions attached to it!! Whether you take it or leave it is totally your prerogative. So when our friend came selling tickets for an upcoming play in the city of Kochi (Cochin), I decided to take it, as the play itself was deceptively titled “*conditions apply”!!

Being high on plays after Rajat Kapoor’s – Hamlet – The Clown Prince & Naseerudin Shah’s Antigone , which were brilliantly put together, I had great expectations from “*conditions apply”.

Paresh Rawal the great

I could have stayed for few more days at home in Chennai but I simply had to be back in Kochi, in time for the much acclaimed play by Paresh Rawal called shaadi@barbaadi.com.

What a name! Quite ominous I must say. Does shaadi really have to be barbaadi??…well I will take that topic up in my subsequent blog posts. For now, let me share with you my experience of the show.

Jazz all the way – music concert by Usha Uthup

usha

Usha Uthup or didi (elder sister) as she is fondly referred to, was in Cochin (Kochi) city recently, to enthrall the crowd with her contemporary music concert.

Held at JTPac, the concert was the second performance or initiative by the management after the astounding sBesame mucho, how put up by Dr.L Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurthy earlier this month.

What a performance and what a performer! Didi connects with her audience like nobody’s business. Even a bathroom singer feels inspired to sing with her as she encourages all to join her in singing lines from songs like Words, Besame mucho, Kaisi paheli hai ye…etc..,

Kathakali

Where to watch Kathakali performance in Kochi?

Kathakali, the classical dance drama is quite popular amongst the tourists and locals in Kochi / Cochin. There are many art centers who organize Kathakali performance on a daily basis. However, it’s important that you go to an established and reputed center. I have a bad experience once. Without taking the name of the center, the dingy auditorium coupled with a Malayalam accented English speaking narrator, I was ready to sleep!
Since, a layman totally depends on the narrator to understand the various gestures and facial expressions of the artist; the role hence played by the storyteller becomes very important. I am giving you here, names of two centers that you can surely go to…

Aamir Khan doesn’t stay behind in associating himself with social issues and causes. Aamir khan is the Indian face to the Earth Day campaign in India.

Its indeed a pleasure to see people taking seriously The Earth Hour, an annual international event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund). Yesterday I walked in into the Cochin Yacht Club and learnt that they would be joining the campaign for raising the awareness towards climate change and the need for a call to action. The hostel at  Choice School, Kochi would also be observing the Earth Hour, during 8:30 to 9:30 pm on 28th March, 2009.

Nedumbassery airport gets its medical unit..

I remember clearly the agony on the face of my friend as she narrated to me about her painful experience at the Delhi airport 2 years ago. It so happened that her husband who had a back problem was suddenly reeling in excruciating pain. Unfortunately for them, they didn’t have the medicines handy. But for a fellow passenger (God bless him) who helped them with a pain killer, I don’t even want to imagine where things would have lead for my friend.
