The new TdF champion

Just as I had predicted in my last post, about how Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky was going to win the last individual time trial (TT) of this year’s tour, Wiggins, blasted over the 53.5km course as if there was no tomorrow, and in the bargain, not only won his second stage of the tour, but also sealed his efforts to be the first ever British winner of the Tour de France!!

“Now Voeckler repeats Bagneres de Luchon win @TdF 2012”

Voeckler in King Of Mountains jersey

This indefatigable Frenchman on the Europcar team, by the name of Thomas Voeckler, simply knows how to make it, in the month of July. At the age of 37, and perhaps riding his last professional tour, he rode like a champion that he is, and repeated a victory at the same place where he won two years back!!Just as I had predicted in my last post, about how the breakaway could win today, and named Voeckler amongst the most probable ones to do so, in the Queen’s Stage of the race today, Voeckler rode, what might be ultimately his final swansong ride to victory and what a spectacular ride it was! But knowing this sportsman, am not willing to place any bets, for all you know, he might just decide to continue next year too!!

Fedrigo repeats at Pau

Pierrick Fédrigo of FDJ-BigMat rode a race, which he had planned for the whole of two years!! In 2010, he won the tour stage ending at Pau, and after missing the tour last year due to health issues, rode in to Pau as the winner in today’s stage, repeating the feat first done 2 years back. With this win, he too like yesterday’s winner Luis Leon Sanchez, has 4 stage wins in the tour.

Ecstatic Greipel after winning Stage 13

A resurgent Andre Greipel of Lotto-Belisol team, fought through the final climb of Mont Saint-Clair, 23 kms from the finish, and a few other very strong riders, to win his fourth stage in the Tour.  On a stage route, which was perfectly flat in the last 20kms, it was the Lotto-Belisol team which did the major amount of work to chase down the attacks, till the Team Sky train trying to put Edvald Boasson Hagen in pole position started the final charge.

Wiggins on podium

Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky, showed today, why he is being billed as the most certain bet, to win in the tour, to win this year’s TdF. In a race stage where, the current time trial world champion along with a very in form former 4 times time trial world champion were supposed to be the hottest items, Wiggins rode at a phenomenal pace to win by a huge margin, crushing all opponents. While doing so, he also rode away from the reigning champion Cadel Evans in the race for the overall title.

Wiggins in Yellow

With the first major climb of the Tour, a Cat 1, at the La Planchedes Belles Filles, the TdF 2012, has showcased, what bike racing is all about. Its not just the super speed on the wheels that count, but the determination & grit to keep pounding away on the roads, however steep they turn out and reaching the finish line is what the real man will have to do. To win the crown, he will have to do it in the shortest time frame possible, or leave the others behind.
