A Country within a Country!!
Traveling from one place to the next during our Europe trip was made on sudden impulses and mostly based on suggestions from our local friends. There was no Lonely Planet and the likes, just us and our whims!! And the only way we kept up with our friends or rather the other way around was through Facebook!! My status on Facebook usually was the easiest reference point in locating us. While I was in Copenhagen the capital & the largest city of Denmark, when my friend from Slovenia mailed me urging me to visit Christiania, a Freetown located a few minutes walk from Downtown Copenhagen. So the next day that’s where we headed to…. Christiania!! Read more...

Autumn in Cambridge..image : Priya Q
I wasn’t planning to write about Cambridge any time soon till I saw the promos of the new Amitabh Bacchan and Abhishek Bacchan’s Bollywood movie ‘Paa’. Memories of my trip came rushing by as I watched Vidya Balan walking around the streets of Cambridge. The very same streets which I had walked around just 2 months back!!

Greyfriars Bobby
From time immemorial, people have vouched about the unconditional love and faith displayed by their pet dogs. People even assert that their dogs are their stress busters! But who would have imagined the undying love of a dog for its owner long after the latter’s death?
While taking a city walk in Edinburgh I came across a statue of a dog inviting lot of attention from people who were evidently tourists. Who was this dog? And why was there a statue instituted for it? I was quite intrigued. Read more...

Two man made marvels & what a sight!! ……Oresund Bridge (Øresundsbron)
With the Copenhagen summit preparations going on in full swing and every news media house piling in with snippets about the country of Denmark & its beautiful capital city Copenhagen, I would like to showcase a sight & two man made marvels – which I saw couple of months back when I was traveling from Copenhagen.
Both the marvels I saw were on my train ride from Copenhagen, Denmark to Malmo in Sweden. One of the most beautiful stretches of travel that had a refreshing touch and an everlasting imprint on my memory. Read more...

Following Tour de France the annual cycling event and exploring parts of France, Spain and other neighboring countries was a great way to start my Europe trip this year. In the very first week of my trip I found myself in this bustling and vibrant city in the South of France called Montpellier.
Located near the Mediterranean Sea, Montpellier is a beautiful city teeming with energy and surrounded with lots of history. Even a simple walking tour of the city will show its wonderful architecture and rich history.

I was in Piran, a small, clean & historic town in Slovenia, at a café located in the centre of the city overlooking the vast ocean enjoying my cup of frothy cappuccino while my friends indulged themselves with the locally brewed beers. During the course of our conversation I learnt about the UNESCO World Heritage site in Slovenia. –Skocjanske James or Skocjan caves. And I immediately made a mental note to visit this place. My trip to Greece was more than what I bargained for courtesy my local friend who did her best to capsulate the best of things to do and see in Greece in the one week of my stay there. One such trip was made to the mystical Meteora.
Unknowingly it was my third trip to a UNESCO declared world heritage site in this Europe trip. The other two were Stonehenge in England and Skocjan caves in Slovenia. I will try to write about them soon.

Come August and Edinburgh the beautiful capital of Scotland turns into a massive performance pad buzzing with artists and performers from across the world.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe or simply ‘The Fringe” started in 1947when 8 theatrical groups decided to land up uninvited at the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF), the original and the official festival consisting of opera, theatre, dance, music and visual arts. Over the years new and more performers started turning up to perform on the outskirts of EIF and by 1958 The Festival Fringe Society was formed which provided all information pertaining to the Fringe shows. Now the EIF and the Fringe run as independent bodies bringing separate programmes every year.

While in Copenhagen I got introduced to a new term called Hygge – phonetically Hu-gah or Hew –ga. of Norwegian origin this word meant well-being, but the Danes promoted Hygge to such an extent that now it is popularly known as a Danish phenomenon! I was told that just as the word is difficult to pronounce properly, it is equally difficult to explain the real essence of hyggelig (adjective). Read more...

Recounted down below are my experiences & readings about my travel in Europe for the last 2 months.
People in Europe generally get excited the moment they get to know you are an Indian. The feeling is absolutely amazing. They have a volley of questions to throw at you about India, the culture, people, food, way of life and but of course the highly exposed “Slumdog Millionaire” and their general reaction towards the movie.
