A brand can play an important role in creating social awareness. And a well established brand finds it easier to do so as somewhere through its advertising it had connected with its customers on an emotional level. Here are few interesting advertisements and branding exercises from the World War II time that I saw at the Museum of Brands, Packaging & Advertising in London.

In my travels through Europe, almost every other day I would visit a museum as it is one of the easiest way to bring oneself upto date with the history of the place I was in. Some of these museums had some unique exhibits & almost every city that I had been to did have a local flavor to their museum.

Harpic

But it was in London city that I came upon this unique museum dedicated totally to “BRANDS”. Did you know that Vim is a brand that was launched in 1904? And Harpic in 1924? Did you know there was an Indian tonic water by the name Hunts?

Hunts Indian Tonic Water

One museum in London that I would recommend as must visit for all the marketing & advertising professionals who visit London is the Museum of Brands, Packaging & Advertising in Notting Hill, London. And why only marketing professionals…in fact anyone and everyone who is interested in learning about the evolution of the many brands that we use actively in our lives, must make time for a trip to this Brand’s Museum.

Colgate

Gillette

What started as a hobby of a 16 year old has now turned into something very remarkable. Robert Opie, who has authored many books on British consumerism, started collecting wrappers at an early age and what culminated out from this hobby now is history!!

Pears

Comfort

Band Aid

I thought that I would be able to cover this comparatively small museum in 1 or 2 hours but instead I ended up being there for almost half a day! This museum is a one of its kind and has an interesting display of various brands showing them in their different stages of evolution.

A point of note was the fact that – One gets emotionally attached to one’s favorite brand to the extent that the brand you use resonates with your identity! Here are few pictures showing some of the brands through its evolution. Brands whose look and feel has definitely changed with times, but brands which all of us identify with…

Well, I can go on for more time since my photo bank is pretty exhaustive…and since I cant share all the pics…I think I will stop now!

It is through branding and advertising that companies talk to their customers. Communication plays a big role in retaining the customer’s loyalty. A few pictures of branding exercises that were carried around World War II will follow in my next post!

After visiting UNESCO Heritage sites like Skocjanske James in Slovenia and Meteora in Metsovo (Greece) I had the opportunity to visit another archaeological marvel at Athens – The Acropolis.

The capital city of Greece, Athens, is one of the world’s oldest cities with a strong role in the Greek history. One walk around this ancient city of Greece and you will get a feeling as of being on heavenly soil. While in Athens one has the options to do very many things. One can spend hours visiting the several beaches, the National Garden, Byzantine church, the many theatrical concerts, the House of Parliament and the monument of Unknown Soldier standing opposite to it or shop away to glory on the streets, but your visit to Athens will be incomplete without visiting the stupendous Acropolis.

Athens city view Image: Mr. Q

Acropolis which translates to “highest city” in Greek was built in ancient times typically on hills with defensive purposes in mind. The collection of temples atop the craggy rocks where festivals were held in the 5th century has been destroyed many times by various enemies. What remains today are the glorious trace of those ruins which is a major tourist attraction and which forms the center piece of Greece tourism.

Thission Image: Mr.Q

It’s quite an interesting story on how the city itself got its name. The legend goes that Cecrops the founder of Athens was born as half man and half snake. In the days of yore, it was believed that each city/town had to have a God / Goddess as the Protector. The people of this town gave him the responsibility to choose the deity. Between God Poseidon and Goddess Athena the two deities in contention he had to decide on which God would protect the city. So each one of them was asked to do something for the town. Poseidon struck his weapon into the rock of the Acropolis forming a well for people to drink water from. However, the water turned out to be salty hence of no use to people. On the other hand Athena touched the ground from where an Olive tree grew which was of more significance. Hence, Athena won the competition and the city got named after her!

Theatre of Dionysos Image: Priya Q

Anyways, as you walk up the Acropolis the architecture with its prominent pillars looks down on you bequeathing a godly experience. One has to pay an entry fee for all the sites, the best offer is the combined entry to all sites at 12 euros which holds good to visit other sites in the vicinity like Ancient and Roman Agora, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Tower of the Winds, Kerameikos, Theatre of Dionysos besides the famous Parthenon. (The Parthenon itself has survived thousand years as a temple, later as a Church & then as a Mosque also!!) It is actually good fun finding each of these locations; as no maps are provided by the counter when you make your ticket purchase and you end up searching around as in treasure hunt  !! (You can visit all the sites around the Acropolis & the Acropolis Museum in one day itself, though you will have to be very determined and push yourselves in the hot sun!!)

The Porch of the Caryatids Image: Mr. Q

Herod Atticus Odeon Image: Mr. Q

Herod Atticus is an Amphitheatre down below you can see from the Acropolis and if you are lucky you might just see musicians and percussionists practicing, like I did. There are daily concerts in the evening and sometimes some big international performers too. [My Visa was expiring hence I had to miss a Vanessa Mae concert scheduled 2 days after my visit!!.. ] The big show tickets are sold at nominal rates.

Temple of Zeus Image: Mr. Q

Temple of Zeus is a masterpiece in itself and stands in grand splendor with expanse area around. Though you will have to vie with groups of Japanese tourists (almost always!!) at the ticket counter!! We found this huge queue and went to check what it was for – only to realize that it was for the evening concert – and none in the queue knew who they were going to see perform!!

Be sure you hydrate yourself with enough liquids as you clamber up the Acropolis, as the heat can be very overwhelming and you definitely do not want a heat stroke to disrupt your tour around the Acropolis. I visited Athens in the month of September in 2009, and it was pretty hot then. But please note you are not allowed to carry any eatables inside however.

Acropolis Museum Image: Priya Q

The new Acropolis museum right opposite the Acropolis had just about opened in 2009 and I was lucky to be able to visit it. This modern looking chic museum has been designed by Bernard Tschumi & Michalis Photiadis and holds reminiscences in the form of thousands of artifacts, besides a café cum restaurant and a souvenir shop. The entry to the museum costs a nominal 1 Euro and is located on Dionyssiou Street close to the Acropolis.

National Museum Image: Priya Q

There is also the National Archaeological Museum with exhibits from different periods of Greek history, which is a must visit for any history buff. The collection of the Mycenea Gold collection from the graves of an era bygone is astounding and spectacular.

Mycenae Gold Artifacts Image: Mr. Q

Death Mask Image: Mr. Q

If you are planning to shop for souvenirs visiting Plaka, Asklipiou or Athenas street will be a good option. Plaka is an all pedestrian walkway lined with shops, cafes and restaurant and offers many choices for shopping. You can pick up some very pretty pottery originally from Sifnos on Plaka Street. However do watch out for cheap and fake ones. If you plan to pick up gifts for your friends fridge magnets, key chains, a bottle of Ouzo or a packets of delicious Olives are few of the choices to pick from.

Mastia necklace

Mastia Bracelet

Almost all tourist shops sell pretty Mastia which believed to ward off evil eye which also can be a good gift. On Ag Theklas Street you will find the famous poet selling world famous sandals! Scott Henderson from Edinburgh will share details on The Poet from Athens in the next post.

To go to Acropolis you need to get down at Syntagma metro station and walk towards the Plaka market area. You can also register for a walking tour conducted by professionals.

Continuing from my last post – As we drove into the hills, we were welcomed by arrays of apple trees spread over vast orchards on either side of the road intermittently interrupted by huge chestnut trees. If you haven’t had chestnuts so far, then you must! Both roasted and boiled chestnuts are delectable. Talking about apples, the apple produce from Zagora is distributed all over the world and is a unique much wanted brand. They are called Zagorin. I was quite lucky to be in Zagora during the picking season which was in September.

Image: Mr. Q

After the long and beautiful drive up the Mount Pelion all of us longed for a bite and some rest before we headed out in the evening. Besides it had started to rain. The spacious balcony of my friend’s vacation home overlooked an extensive garden with apple trees, grapes, strawberry, and kiwis besides flowers including few wild ones. I was told that most of the houses here had their own fruit gardens. My friend quickly tossed together a delicious Greek Salad called Dakos which we relished with Cypuro (a local drink stronger than Ouzo). However, I must admit that Cypuro was way too strong for me hence I had to limit my enjoyment to Dakos.

Greek Salad - Dakos Image: Priya Q

Cypuro Image : Priya Q

Unlike India, people all over Europe prefer having their dinners by early evening and then head out for partying. So that’s what we also did. However, we decided to visit the village of Pouri for a lavish Greek dinner at a small restaurant called Makis. We ordered grilled chops, stuffed pork intestine, pie with greens and spetzofai – which is basically sausages combined with green peppers.

When you visit any of these restaurants you will find that most of them are decades old and mostly one man show with the owner running around from table to table chit chatting and even suggesting the specialties. However, please ensure that you are aware of the prices else you might just be taken for a fishy ride like we did when we visited another restaurant named Niki in Zagora for lunch the next day. A single fish meal costed us €30! However, don’t let that deter you from going to Nikis, as the pitas and sea weed salad are delectable and a must try here.

Being a romantic destination, my friend had decided that Zagora is where she would take her wedding vows and Saint George church is where she will walk the aisle. So it was but obvious that I wanted to visit the Saint George church and visualize the future wedding with her. There are two other churches that you can visit in Zagora called Agia Paraskevi and Agia Kiriaki. Agios Gergiou or the St.George church dates back to the 17th century and looks quite plain from look of it; however the interiors are equally grand with its golden throne and pulpit, designed with intricate motifs inspired by nature.

Boxes with honey bees for collection of honey Image: Mr. Q

Besides, the churches other places to visit are the Greek museum (Rigas) which is one of the oldest schools and famous for famous Greeks who passed out from here. Zagora also houses very old library with a collection of approximately 18,000 books including many rare editions.

It’s simply amazing, how a small village as Zagora can be so self sufficient. They have the mountains, they have the sea, they have churches, bakery, restaurants, pubs…Oh yes! They have pubs and bars as well! I visited one of them called Anamela, where the owner knew all the guests on a first name basis! Do check to find out which days the pubs are open before making your plans; apparently they are opened on public demand and don’t have specific days of week when you expect them to open!

You would have possibly got bored with my statement “The best way to explore a place is by walking” in almost all my travelogues! But, that’s a fact. Winding roads and cobbled by lanes constitutes the roadways and walkways of Zagora. You will notice houses with typical slanting stone roofs. These are traditional houses and are called Arhontika. The flora of this region mainly constitutes of Hydrangea and Gardenia. The greenery, the silence and the warmth of the smiling people around is worth the walk. And I also noticed a board with something written in Greek, one word somehow looked like my name! check it out!

Image: Mr.Q

There are about 24 villages dwelling on the Mount Pelion; Tsagarada is yet another village which has many cafes and interesting restaurants besides spring water fountains that you can visit. Here, at the square of Agia Paraskevi you will find a thousand year old tree, one branch of which is supported by a concrete pillar specially erected for this purpose!

Image: Priya Q

Image: Priya Q

A sparkling blue sea with a flawless white pebbled beach is yet another bonus to your travel kitty. Who could think of having the best of both worlds – hills & sea in one trip! Saint 40 is one of the beaches, a 10 minutes drive from Zagora. It is located at a seaside village called Agioi Saranta. With traces of rain and sun playing hide and seek, the dip in the sea was quite thrilling. As you walk across the beach, other things you might notice are professional anglers, a bar called Mamba – which according to the locals is very popular and quite rocking. You will also notice a statue of a woman with a child that was built in remembrance of a lady and her child who drowned in that very sea! Sad indeed!

Image: Priya Q

The nearest city from where you can drive to Zagora is city of Volos in Thessaly, Greece. Zagora is about 47 kms away from the city of Volos. It is a lively town and from the port of Volos there are daily schedules to the islands of the Sporades: Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos. You can reach Volos also by air and railways.

If you are looking for that perfect vacation where you commune with the nature and be in your restful mind, then Zagora is a place to visit.

My trip to Greece last year was full of cheery surprises. All I had in mind was to visit my friend in Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece and a trip to Athens to dine with the Gods; I didn’t know my fate had many lucky bonuses on cards.

I was in Slovenia and was planning to go to Thessaloniki. Armed with the Eurail pass, I had booked myself couchettes from Ljubljana to Thessaloniki via Belgrade & Sofia. Little did I realize that since Hungary and Bulgaria weren’t a part of European Union (EU), a separate visa was required to enter these countries in the east of Europe; something which I totally overlooked during the trip planning! A week before the journey when I realized the mistake, I was facing a challenge on hand. To reach Thessaloniki via land was just not possible. (Flying in was even more expensive!!) So I changed my itinerary and decided to get to Greece via Italy. That was faster than applying for a visa from Serbia!! So Italy which was not in my original travel plan, a country I plan to visit and explore in my next trip to Europe, came on to my itinerary.

Adriatic Sea, Bari - Italy Image: Priya Q

With a brief stay in Venice and Naples, I reached Bari at the tip of Italy, to get on a ship across the Adriatic Sea to Greece. There are many options available for one to use the Euro rail passes for journeys in Ships too. Bari being a prominent sea port I found loads of tourist groups walking around the city. However, most of these tourists are on a short 3 to 4 hours stay while their cruise liners take in a stop.

An overnight ship ride from Bari, Italy to Igoumenitsa in west of Greece costs €17 per person and is a lovely experience. If you are looking at a separate cabin / room for yourself the charges are much higher. There is a full fledged restaurant, coffee shop, bar and casino on board to keep you entertained at an additional cost. There are two stops made by the ship. So if Athens is your destination, Patras further south of Greece is where you need to get down. My stop was Igoumenitsa.

In my wildest of dreams I did not imagine what was in store when I landed at the port of Igoumenitsa, a city which only has the port to boast about. My friend had driven down from Thessolinki to pick me up & thus my road trip to Thessaloniki from Igoumenitsa was packaged with many stops in between at various historical and quaint villages of Greece including Ionnina, Meteora, Metsovo,… etc. all of which I would highly recommend to anyone planning to explore Greece – as a must visit. I have already shared with you my experience at the quixotic Meteora.

There are so many of these small but historic & beautiful places in Greece that one must read up on all the places one is going to visit or take local assistance in planning your trip in Greece so as to make the most of it.

View from Mount Pelion Image: Priya Q

If you were to ask me where you should or rather must go. Then I would say don’t miss Zagora. Zagora, a dream land village on Mount Pelion is a place you can describe as an idyllic getaway from not only the warps and stress of life but you yourself! This enchanting locale totally soaks you up in its tranquility and takes you to a state of magical thoughts.

My friends vacation house in Zagora, Greece Image: Priya Q

Possibly the best combination of sea and mountains Mount Pelion has many villages offering different adventures. And the best part is that you can stay in one village and still enjoy what other villages have to offer within few minutes drive! I happened to stay in the largest village and probably the most beautiful – Zagora, thanks to my friend who invited me over for a stay at her dream vacation house in Zagora. My stay here gave me some idea about how Alice would have felt in the wonderland! With each room adorned with frills and superfluities this house was a picture straight out from a fairy tale.

Mount Pelion Image: Priya Q

Zagora on Mount Pelion is about 4 to 5 hours drive from Thessaloniki. Right from the time you first get to see it approaching from a distance and then through its winding mountainous roads you get glimpses of what lays ahead, as you drive on wide roads via the city of Volos.

The largest city in Slovenia, Ljubljana is about 2 hours of drive from Koper (if I count the repair time it took to get our car on road then our trip was of 5 hours! ). The Ljubljana Dragon is the symbol of the city and is prominently depicted in the coat of arms on the country flag also. There is a bridge called the Dragon Bridge crossing Ljubljanica River right in the heart of the city. The whole of this area can be explored on foot.

Artists performing on the Cobbler's bridge Image : Priya Q

A little ahead from the Dragon Bridge as you walk you come across the Cobbler’s bridge also called the Shoemakers’ bridge designed by the architect Plecnik. It received its name after many shoemakers set up their stalls on this bridge to sell products. However, now you can find musicians and street artists performing on this bridge.

Dr. France Presersen

Another bridge which is a landmark in Ljubljana is the Triple Bridge which connects the main square and a newer part of town with the Old Town and the Market. It is the best place to take a break and experience the surroundings. As you cross this bridge you find yourself in Preseren square, the main square in Ljubljana. Preseren square or Presernov Trg is dedicated to the greatest Slovenian poet Dr. France Preseren. A statue of the poet has been ensconced at this square and serves as an ideal landmark for meeting friends. Just across this statue is a street that opens from the square where you can see a head of a women stuccoed on a building. Apparently, this woman is none other than lover of the poet Preseren named Julija looking at the statue of her admirer! (Legend has it that she used to stay there and the poet used to write & recite poems for her from the ground floor!!)

Julija Image: Priya Q

Burek

It is in the market close to Preseren square that I had my first Burek, which constitutes to the fast food culture of the country. Extremely rich, Burek is a layered pie with cheese, meat or apples. It is difficult to finish off one portion in one sitting, at least that is what I can say about myself! Nevertheless, it is delectable and a must try when in Slovenia. Having been under the influence of German, Austrian and Hungarian powers in the past the Slovenian cuisine is a mix of all these cultures.

St. Nicholas Cathedral Image: Priya Q

Other attractions to this city are the St. Nicholas Cathedral located at the Vodnik Square walking distance from the Triple Bridge and the Ljubljana Castle dating from the 16th century. I also sneaked a peek at the Ljubljana University, which was quite impressive. I found a lot of people smoking in groups outside and was informed by my friend who was taking me around the city that it was no more allowed to smoke in enclosed areas, hence the groups outside. This is quite opposite to the smoking rule we have here in India where smoking is prohibited in public areas while you are free to do so in the confines of your room!

Having had a walk around the centre of the city, I headed back home for a short break. Later in the evening along with few others I headed out to Metelkova, a place frequented mostly by students. Not a very posh set up, this place acts as a pub cum recreational hub for the local youth. You have various activities like acts / bands etc running in parallel. It also had a hostel which used to be prison once upon a time! The hostel however was done up nicely and had a nice café on the ground floor. This place is where the youth of Ljubljana hangs out. The music is loud & there are several places which you can hang out, depending on your choice – trance, rave, techno, house…etc. I met a DJ performing at the open stage there and was thrilled to hear strains of Bollywood music. It so happens that he visits India for 3 months every year & he is as clued to the Indian music scene as I was!!

I was staying with a friend in Vrhnika, 20 minutes drive from the capital city Ljubljana. One of the days I also managed to get invited by my friend’s friend to her Violin making factory, which was truly an enriching experience. The musical saga ended with an Indian evening my friend hosted where I exhibited my culinary skills along with teaching few Bollywood moves!

Lake Bled Image: Priya Q

The next day was reserved for a day excursion to the delightful Lake Bled which was another picture cut out from the fairy tales. A popular tourist destination Lake Bled is a glacial lake in the Julian Alps located in the North West of Slovenia. It is the most romantic sight that you can think of, may be that is why you have couples coming to get married at the Church on the Bled Island.

Couple on their way to getting married Image: Priya Q

I actually saw a bride sitting pretty in her white wedding gown and her groom suave in his black suit on a boat on their way to the church to take their wedding vows. You can make a trip to the island on a boat along with other tourists. Per person cost is €12 which I was told was a steal since normally it costs somewhere in the range of €20- €25. Was it my lucky day? May be! You are given approximately 30 minutes on the island after which you need to get back to your boat. Do not forget to ring the church bell which is said to make your wish come true! (Since mine had already come true, I did not!!)

The Bled Castle Image: Mr. Q

Characters dressed in traditional Slovenian attires (looked more like theatrical Roman attires!) welcome you into the medieval Bled Castle located on the top of the lake. Bled Castle is yet another place where couples loved to get married and I met two such couples amidst a grand set up. The entry cost is around €7 which in my book of accounts is a bit too much for there is nothing much the castle can boast of. There is a small museum detailing Slovenian history & highlights along with delightful costumes. Of course, the stunning bird’s eye view of the turquoise blue Bled Lake, is unforgettable and is definitely not to be missed.

View of the Lake Bled from the Bled Castle Image: Priya Q

The Bled lake is 35 kilometers from the Ljubljana International Airport and 55 km from the capital city Ljubljana. Bled offers its tourist a wide range of sport activities like skiing, horse riding, golf, fishing, hiking and trekking.

Having filled up my lungs with fresh air, my mind with tranquility the Bled Lake had to offer and my thoughts with everlasting memories I headed back home. Even today when I think of Slovenia – Bled Lake & the Castle comes foremost to my mind and of course Burek follows a close second!!

Image: Priya Q

2-3 days was all that I had planned to spend in Slovenia, but I ended up staying for a full 5 days traveling and exploring various places across Slovenia, such is the charm of this country located in the Central Europe.

I was in London trying to find out the best and the cheapest possible way to get to Slovenia when I came across a bargain from Ryan Air. You won’t believe it that I spent only 4 Euros to reach Trieste in Italy which is around 15 kms from Koper, a beautiful coastal city in Slovenia. So when you are traveling in Europe; do check on the various offers and discounts made available by various airlines before booking your tickets. There are lots of buses and trains available from Trieste to go to other cities in Slovenia. Since I had a friend receiving me at Trieste bus station I didn’t have to look further into commuting details.

Image: Priya Q

Cool fresh breeze emanating from the deep blue ocean, fringed with palm trees, cafes and bars – Koper oozes out its tranquil juices to calm your senses. So laid back is the culture of this city that you fall in love with the place almost immediately. So if you are looking for that perfect vacation where you can put your feet up and do nothing, Koper is the place to be.

Having traveled to the other countries in Europe before landing in Slovenia, I also found it relatively cheaper. My favorite cappuccino costed 1.20 Euros almost everywhere in Slovenia, whereas it costs anything between 3.20 to 6 Euros in other parts of Europe! I loved my coffee in Slovenia not because it costed less but also it was the best. I also realized one thing that if you want your coffees hot you need to tell them while ordering or you will end up having a nearly cold coffee. Apparently that’s how the locals like it!

It was in Koper where we noticed for the first time that all the cars were running with both the headlights on in full daylights!! Initially, we thought some of these drivers had forgotten to switch them off. Later on in the day we realized that it’s a legal requirement to keep the lights on at all times of the day while driving a car!! (I saw some cars also do this in Greece.) So don’t ever switch off the headlights if you are driving in Slovenia

Orchestra performing...Image: Priya Q

While in Koper watch out for places where bands and local artists perform for to most such places anybody can enter. I was lucky to be around a huge open hall (overlooking the Sea) which I was told was once a fish market when a local orchestra landed to perform!

After an early dinner (around 6 pm!!) of baked potatoes with pumpkin sauce we set off from Koper for an evening outing. Just a half an hour drive from Koper to its west is located picturesque Piran. The first impression of this place is as if someone has cut out a picture from a fantasy story book of a small medieval town based on the shores of Adriatic Sea far away from the real world!

The Tartini Square...
The main attraction here is the square called the Tartini Square named after the famous composer and violist Giuseppe Tartini who played an important role in building the cultural heritage of the city. A large bronze statue of the artist is commissioned in the middle of the square. At the square I also witnessed a shoot whether for television or movie I could not tell. But the attires of the characters were as if reaffirming the town’s history of being a part of the Roman Empire around the year 952!

Image: Priya Q

Caffe del Morro Image: Priya Q

A stroll on the breezy walkway separating the Sea and the array of cafes and restaurants is heavenly. I decided to sit in one of the cafes and enjoy (no points for guessing) cappuccino and simply enjoy the view of the vast Sea while my friends opted for a local cola and beer. Unlike rest of the Europe where you are flooded with beer choice, Slovenia offers two options named Lasko (Green) and Union (Red) of which I was told Lasko is the better of the two. This little town of Piran has its own international airport and a marina as well!

Image: Priya Q

I have already told you about my trip to Divaca the site of the less commercial but the extraordinary Skocjanske James / Skocjan Caves in one of my earlier write-ups. If you are in Slovenia, a visit to this magnificent UNESCO Heritage site is a definite must.

Image: Priya Q

After spending two and half days of fun and rejuvenation at Koper, I decided to travel to Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia. Don’t ask me why it is pronounced as Lub-lee-ana while it’s spelt so different. After spending a month in France I had somehow got used to the silent letters and way-off pronunciations! I remember speaking in syllables in France for nobody understood my pronunciation! So Lub-lee-ana it is!

My travelogue on Ljubljana and the beautiful Lake Bled will follow

I was thinking whether ‘Amsterdam – Sex and the city’ would have been more apt a title for this post. Will tell you why this thought crossed my mind as I progress . To begin with, let me take you around the city through the same route I took a few months back.

Amsterdam – a city 2 meters above the sea level derives its name from Amstellardam meaning a dam on river Amstel. The largest city of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is not only the capital city but also the financial and cultural capital.

image: Priya Q

bike stand near the central station image: Priya Q

The first thing that hits you as you come out of the central railway station is the number of bicycles on the road. It is unbelievably high. All tourists have an option of exploring the city on a bike, however better sense prevented me from hiring one!! Coming from a non biking culture I would have either got run over by the seasoned racing cyclists or would have ended up inviting unwelcoming stares. So I stuck to what I was best at – Walk!

The architecture of the building and houses in Amsterdam are quite unique. Don’t think it as a trick of the eye, if you find most of the buildings tilted, for that’s because for a fact they are! The city is fairly large and hence I had to prioritize what I wanted to do in my three days of stay in this Dutch city.

image: Priya Q

image: Priya Q

I had read the book – Anne Frank’s diary, so the visit to the famous Anne Frank Huis or Anne Frank’s House topped my list of things to see. Situated in a peaceful area in front of a beautiful canal is located the Ann Franks Huis. It is hard to believe by the look of it, that almost 50 years ago at the same place a Jewish family had hid themselves from the atrocious Nazis. Walking tour of the house costs approximately 9 Euros and takes you through all the rooms that were then occupied by the Frank family. A particular look at Anne’s room gives you the proof of the hope the little girl had despite the darkness around, for her room had posters and colorful clipping from magazines she read and painted a happy picture than rest of the rooms. The interiors in the Anne Frank House have been maintained close to original with blackened windows etc. Most of the museums in Europe have the option for you to send a live video to your friends; Anne Frank’s museum has it too. But you hardly feel cheerful after the tour to send your friends a happy note!

image: Priya Q

Having interest in art – my next destination was the Rembrandt House museum, the famous Dutch painter and etcher whose paintings I saw in many of the art museums across Europe. Rembrandt lived in style and did many of his paintings in this huge house for many years before he went bankrupt and all his household possessions where sold in an auction. There still exists the original etching room where there are periodical displays of the working of this form of art for the curious visitors. The room where Rembrandt painted is fairly large as compared to rest of the rooms and airy. You can take a picture of yours here along with easel and paints! The entry to the museum costs you around 4 Euros.

image: Priya Q

The Dutch land has produced so many renowned painters. Another prominent one is Vincent Van Gogh who has a huge museum to his credit. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam holds the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings in the world. Three of his most famous paintings Sunflowers, Potato eaters and the Bedroom in Arles are on display in this museum.

Though there are more options of museums, I decided to see just three of them and utilize the rest of my limited time in exploring other facets of the Amsterdam city. The idea was to get a taste of everything.

image: Priya Q

The Westerkerk is the Protestant church in Amsterdam located very close to the Anne Frank’s Huis. Mention of this church and its chiming clock is found in Anne Frank’s diary. The painter Rembrandt was buried in Westerker in 1669.

Another attraction to the city is the number of canals meandering through the city. Various canal cruise operators are in operations where you can board the boat and take a tour of the busy city from the serene waters!

image: Priya Q

I was curious about few of the buildings which I noticed during my walk around the Amsterdam city. Old but extremely colorful with graffitis, pictures and symbols painted all over the walls. On checking, I learnt that those where actually squat buildings, a concept I never herd of back home. Squatting is an act of occupying an unoccupied or abandoned building for the time s/he called squatters want. Squatters neither pay any rent nor own any part of the building. So people who do not have a place to stay just squat and move out once their hunt for a house is over or in other case…never move out? I don’t know!

One thing I learnt post my visit to Amsterdam was that a coffee shop is the not the same as a café. There is a big difference. Here’s how…any coffee shop in Amsterdam is actually an establishment which legally sells permitted quantity of cannabis for personal consumption! The coffee shops need to have license to be operational. Few of the coffee shops, I was told sold non alcoholic drinks and food but not all. So, just like me if you are in a mood for a steaming cappuccino look for a café and not a coffee shop . Btw this was the second place after Freetown Christiana in Copenhagen; I found Cannabis sold out in open.

image: Priya Q

Another thing I was attracted to in almost all the cities in Europe was the local weekly market. I happened to visit one in Amsterdam too and the colors around made by various knick knacks on sale are any photographer’s dream besides the shoppers!! Here are few pictures…

image: Priya Q

image: Priya Q

If am telling you about a place, how can I not mention food, for I truly believe that no experience is complete till one tastes the local food. So, what to eat when in Amsterdam? Haring Fish is a local delicacy and can be tried from small stalls. Its for the real experimenters only, as it’s a raw fish which is given to you, and they will even show you how to swallow it!!

Poffertjes, the sweet baby pancakes are a must try. Warm and dusted with sugar powder, these pancakes are quite a hit with kids of ‘all ages’…and since I satisfied the criteria I tried some Another one for the ones with sweet tooth is the Slagroom – cake / pastry with rich topping of whipped cream. All the restaurants have veg options as well, just that meat is more popular, so vegetarians can survive in this big city, so worry not!

Who doesn’t know about the red light district at Amsterdam? This infamous part of the city is a major tourist attraction. 10 minutes walking distance from the central station, the red light area is full of sex shops, museums, brothels,… etc. Night is the time to go, if you really want to experience the pulse of the area. Though for the needy person sex as a commodity is available through the day!! Just walk the streets and watch out for the Red lamp outside the buildings, if its glowing – its business time!! The skimpily clad women behind windows flashing fluorescent red light are as there as if mannequins in a big shopping mall! As the night progresses, the area gets busier. The sex museum on the main street 200m away from the central railway station offers vivid details and pictures from the world of sex. Gays, lesbians, straights with their fantasies are pinned up as photographs for the visiting public! So overtly open is the city about the subject that they don’t stop just here. Walk in to shops and you will see chocolates, pastas, candies,..etc. in different shapes!! (read between the lines).

There are few pics I took especially for all you pasta lovers (which includes yours truly)

One city I fell in love with during my first visit albeit short one in the year 2006 is Vienna the capital city of Austria. I consider myself lucky, for 2009 gave me one more opportunity to visit and see Vienna up close and that too leisurely.

So what is it that attracts one to Vienna? Plush green gardens, larger than life architectural buildings, markets, music and culture? The answer is each one of these things, yes everything!

Unlike some of the capital cities in Europe like Monaco, Copenhagen, Andorra,… etc., which I visited, Vienna is fairly big enough and you will have to hop and hop off bus and trains every now and then. Do check for the group travel discounts before you purchase the tickets.

The very first thing I did after landing in Vienna was visit the tourist information centre where I collected city information available in printed flyers. I also checked on the availability of a Vienna Card. At Innsbruke I enjoyed so many benefits out of the Innsbruke card that I became used to the offers! Luckily it was available in Vienna as well; however the benefits were varied and less in number. All said it’s still worth to get the Vienna Card since it entitles you to free train and bus rides and discounts at listed touristy locations. You can pay upfront for 24 hrs / 48 or 72 hrs depending on the duration of your stay.

Let me cover for you some details about things to do, places to see and food to eat while in Vienna! And food comes first

Vienna – Food:

image : Priya Q

When in Vienna one must try the Wiener Schnitzel which is basically a cutlet made from pounded meat coated with flour, dipped in egg and recoated in breadcrumbs before frying in butter. Any Viennese joint will serve you the traditional Schnitzel.

Vienna is famous for its cafes and cakes. So please do not think of leaving Vienna without having a hot apple strudel and the delicious Sacher Torte. The Sacher Hotel had introduced this chocolate cake with apricot jam, hence the name Sacher Torte. This cake is such a hit that you will find this torte available as Sacher Torte across Vienna without having any connection whatsoever with the Sacher Hotel!

image : Priya Q

Vienna has many beer gardens where you can walk in and enjoy your mug of beer. However, I must warn you that the best seats at most of these beer gardens are booked weeks in advance. How do people decide when they want to have beer and that too weeks in advance?! Beats me totally! So yes, my friend and I had to make do with a seat inside the restaurant.

image : Priya Q

There is another drink which was news to my ears called Sturm. A cloudy drink, it’s made from grapes and is more like the toddy that we can get in south of India. It cannot be stored for a long time and has to be consumed within a couple of days of making. A fizzy drink, it turned out to be a huge hit with my friend is actually very popular amongst the locals. (Though it’s only available in the fag end of the grape harvest season)

There are lots of street vendors who sell snacks like sausages and pizzas. A strong Turkish influence can be felt as you roam around Vienna with countless Kebab joints spread across the city.

Vienna Sightseeing:

image : Priya Q

Belvedere Palace: Belvedere Palace was constructed for Prince Eugene of Savoy by J.L. von Hildebrandt, a famous Baroque architect. Belvedere Palace with its lush green sprawling gardens was meant to serve as a summer residence. The Upper Belvedere still offers a spectacular vie of the city of Vienna. The art lovers depending on their interest level can spend from few hours to a whole day at the Belvedere Palace for it houses works of various Austrian artists You will find works of artist of the Secession movement such as Gustav Klimt (1867-1918), Egon Schiele (1890-1918) or Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980). I noted that ‘The Kiss’ from Gustav Klimt attracts a lot of attention. The visit will cost you 8 Euros per person. The audio guide comes at an additional cost.

Schonbrunn Palace: A part of the UNESCO’s world heritage list, Schonbrunn Palace is the most significant monument in Austria. As you enter the main gate an expansive pale yellow colored palace stands welcoming you. A tour of the Palace can be taken which is split into three parts A, B and C. Depending upon how much time you have you can choose your option. I went for all three plus the stunning gardens. The interiors of the Palace are rococo styled with its crystal chandeliers, huge mirrors, frescoed ceilings and gilded ornaments. You will see during the tour rooms of Maria Theresa, the only female ruler of Habsburg dominion, her sitting rooms, meeting rooms, bed room and the room where the 6 year old Mozart played for the empress. There are rooms of Imperial couple Franz Joseph and Sisi. A complete dekho of the gardens itself will require considerable amount of your time. For fun a labyrinth has been set up along side a play area. Making it to the final point in the labyrinth was quite fun, however getting lost in it was not! The visit will cost you around 20 Euros per person.

State Opera: For music lovers, a performance at the Vienna State Opera house could be more than what they can bargain. The massive Opera House at Vienna has a world-wide reputation for its first-class opera performances and is also known because of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

image : Priya Q

image : Priya Q

Austrian Parliament: Yes I visited the Austrian Parliament! A guided tour which lasted for approximately an hour takes you around the various rooms where the National council and Federal council members sit and work from. The architecture of the building is highly ornamental with frescoes and gilded pillars etc. The visit will cost you 4 Euros per person.

image: Priya Q

St. Stephan’s Cathedral: Throughout my trip around Europe one thing that was common to all cities is the presence of magnificent cathedrals. St. Stephan’s Cathedral is “the” cathedral at Vienna standing tall at 137 m. Built in Gothic style the cathedral has gigantic roofs with tall and lean towers. The cathedral is located in the heart of the city centre with many shops and market around. The entry to the cathedral is free however if you plan to visit the tower, you need to pay a nominal fee.

image: Priya Q

Mozarthaus Vienna: Mozart house is located within walking distance from the St. Stephan’s Cathedral and stages an exhibition rendering details about Mozart, his life in Vienna, his famous pieces of work, his family, friends,…etc. The Mozarthaus is open everyday between 10 am and 7 pm.

Spanish Riding School: I was told that the Spanish riding school was the oldest and the last riding school in Europe where the classes are conducted in the most authentic classical fashion. The name Spanish was derived from the fact that the horses were of Spanish origin!! I couldn’t go in since you need to book your tickets not days, not months but a year in advance!

image: Priya Q

image: Priya Q

image: Priya Q

image: Priya Q

Naschmarkt: I was told that my visit to Vienna is not complete till I visit Naschmarkt. And I wasn’t disappointed. Naschmarkt is not just any market but a very organized confluence of Austrian and oriental influence. From flowers, to cheese to wine to Sturm this market has varied assorted tidbits to offer. Do take a while to walk around and have a leisurely lunch from any of the food stalls lined up for you.
Anchor Clock: Located at the oldest square of Vienna ‘Hoher Markt’, the Anchor Clock is a piece of art in itself. It was built between 1911 and 1977 after the plans of the painter Franz von Matsch. The clock forms a bridge between two parts of the Anker Insurance Company’s building. The clock comprises of 12 historical figures from different eras that start parading with music, across the bridge in the course of 12 hours.

Café Central: Though Vienna boasts of a cozy café culture but in my opinion Café Central is a must visit. Not only are the cakes and pastries delectable; the ambience with its grand traditional set up takes you into an age old era. High ceilings, baroque style architecture with huge chandeliers sets a different mood for the visitor. Café Central is located at Herrengasse 14.

Prater Herrrreinspazier – The much publicized Giant Ferris wheel at Vienna offers to give a nice view of the city, just like the London Eye. However, what I didn’t know was that Giant Ferris Wheel didn’t stand in solitude; it was actually a part of a fairly large amusement park with many more attractions. A must visit with kids. The Vienna Card does offer a discount on the Ferris wheel ride.

Danube Tower: This 352 meters high Danube tower gives you a panoramic view of the city of Vienna. You also have the option to relax with a cup of coffee as you enjoy the view at the rotating café.

That was a synopsis of what I did when I was in Vienna. Hopefully it gives you fair amount of information that will help you plan your trip to the beautiful Wien or Vienna!

Walk of Shame & a gory glimpse into the past….

I was in Munich when my friend asked me whether I would be interested in visiting the first Nazi concentration camp opened in Germany. While on a vacation one generally tends to visit places and do things that are pleasant; but here I was looking at visiting an important chapter from the history which I had read back in school. Reading about something is alright by me, but I also think that seeing is believing! We had already visited the Anne Frank’s house at Amsterdam (I will post about it in the days to come) and had seen how a Jewish family had lived under the very nose by the Nazis. So I decided to visit the Dachau Concentration camp the very next day.

Pronounced as “da-ka-uu”, this concentration camp was opened up in the year 1933 on the grounds of an abandoned Armaments factory near the medieval town of Dachau. Dachau is located about 16 kms northwest of Munich in the state of Bavaria. It roughly took us an hour to reach Dachau by rail. (For families or couples visiting, check for the group tickets available at the ticket vending machine for cheaper travel!!)

image: Priya Q

image: Priya Q

As you step out of the Dachau railway station you will find a huge board with pictorial depiction and information about the route that was taken to transport the prisoners from the station to the concentration camp. (A walk, which I would term as the “Walk of Shame” for all humanity) Though there is regular bus service from the station to the camp, I decided to walk the same route as the prisoners did! One thing that surprised me though was that the route is not very discreet throughout so in no way is it possible that people in Dachau weren’t aware of the ghastly activities of the Nazis, as they claimed to!!

Panel 2 image: Priya Q

Panel 3 Image : Priya Q

The walk route is demarcated quite clearly by the 11 boards that stand on this Path of Remembrance. Each board depicts the route, some pictures about the place & snippets of information. I found that on that day I was the only one making that walk, with majority of the other visitors opting for the bus ride from the station to the camp. (For all those who are traveling by train, there is no need to take a separate ticket as the bus ride to & fro is also included in your train ticket!!)

The entry to the concentration camp is free; however it advisable to hire an audio guide which takes you through the whole camp systematically with related information. The audio guides can be hired at a charge from the office located before you reach the main gate. Opposite to the office is the first watch tower from where the SS men used to keep an eye on the prisoners and here is where your Dachau Concentration camp tour begins.

Administrative office image: Priya Q

Just opposite to the main entrance, you will find the administrative offices of the then SS leaders currently occupied by the Bavarian army officials. Also you will see the remains of the railway tracks that lead from the station to the camp, except for the fact that it is no longer in use and there are thick layers of mud covering it as if trying to erase the traces of its horrid past.

Arbeit Macht Frei image: Priya Q

The main gate bears the legend “Arbeit Macht Frei” meaning “Labour Brings Liberty”. However, the reality inside was something totally different. For, once the prisoner’s crossed this gate – life literally ended for them. The SS men subjected all the prisoners to brutal and horrific treatment – strenuous everyday drills, unreasonable beatings, physical torture, subjects of medical testing,…etc. the prisoners went through it all. It is said that the prisoners in Dachau were even forced to stand without moving for endless hours as a punishment. Being the first of its kind, Dachau actually served as a prototype for the other Nazi concentration camps that followed.

To organize the Dachau concentration camp the SS leader Heinrich Himmler hired a fanatic named Theodor Eicke also nicknamed as the ‘Father of the Concentration Camp System.’ Eicke categorically instructed all the SS guards to set aside all sentiments and sympathy for the prisoners and treat them with hatred. It was under Eicke, Rudolf Höss was trained, who then went on be the commandant of the concentration camp at Auschwitz.

Image: Priya Q

Image: Priya Q

Once inside the camp the prisoners’ head were shaven off and a striped uniform given with different color stars as a distinguishing factor. The Jews were forced to wear yellow stars, the gay & homosexual suspects wore pink triangle (inverted), Red triangle (inverted) meant a political prisoner, Green triangle (inverted) was for habitual criminals. There were many, many such colour combinations & stars & triangles. The prisoners weren’t allowed to loiter around or make speeches to fellow inmates. Any rebellious behavior was awarded with brutal punishment like whiplashes, confinement to a stand up prison, solitary confinements,…etc. Sometimes the prisoners were shot dead and the explanation merely said ‘shot while attempting to escape.’

In total, over 200,000 prisoners from more than 30 countries were housed in Dachau of whom two-thirds were political prisoners and nearly one-third were Jews. 25,613 prisoners are believed to have died in the camp and almost another 10,000 plus in its sub camps, primarily from disease, malnutrition and suicide. In early 1945, there was a typhus epidemic in the camp followed by an evacuation, in which large numbers of the weaker prisoners died. One point that I observed was that this being the first of the “Concentration Camp” in Hitler’s reign all kinds of experimentation & rules where tried out here on the prisoners. All deviant practices were first tried here & improved upon before being implemented in all the other camps spread across Europe concurred by Hitler’s army.

Barracks Image: Priya Q

Unlike Auschwitz, not much of the original stuff is retained at the Dachau concentration camp. As you enter the main gate, you find yourself walking into acres of land where the prisoners queued up everyday before their daily chores began. On the left hand side are the remains of 32 barracks (just the foundation outlines remain now) which were initially built to hold upto 5,000 people but when the number of prisoners ran into many thousands, the prisoners were stuffed into these barracks. These barracks soon became most unhygienic and inhumane. Opposite to the barracks is a building with its roof painted with the slogan: “There is one way to freedom. Its milestones are: obedience, zeal, honesty, order, cleanliness, temperance, truth, sense of sacrifice and love for the Fatherland.” This building is now a museum with telltale pictures, memorabilia and description about Hitler, his men and the prisoners. ( And every single picture of Hitler has been defaced!!)

A memorial site has been built with ‘Never Again’ written over it in five different languages by Dr. Johannes Neuhäusler, Auxiliary Bishop of Munich and former Dachau inmate, June 17, 1960. There is yet another museum which also houses an auditorium that shows a movie about the Nazis and their anti social activities. I also had a dekho here at the hooks on which the prisoners were hanged for hours at length and other means of sadistic punishments the prisoners had to undergo.

Towards the south west of the camp (if the main entrance is south) is situated the infamous gas chamber of Dachau concentration camp called the Baracke X. Here you will find the most gruesome symbols of inhumanity. The gas chamber was used to kill a single or group of individuals and not for mass murders. At least that is what the literature available tells us!! Even to put the prisoners into this horrifying chamber the Nazis had a very convincing story. They used to tell all those who were to be killed – that they were not very clean and so all of them are going to be given a special bath.

The first room is where the prisoners were asked to remove their clothes before they entered the shower room which was in reality the gas chamber. Showers were fitted overhead to fool the prisoners with none of them being connected to water pipes!! Two bins on the outside wall were used to pour in Zyklon-B poison gas pellets into the gas chamber. Once the prisoners were inside the shower room, the doors were sealed and the gas was poured in from the sides. After the prescribed time limit was over, the chamber was opened and the bodies dragged into the cremation oven placed in the next room. All the dead bodies were burnt here.

At the other end of the camp boundary is a Jewish memorial, a Protestant memorial called the Church of Reconciliation and a Catholic Church of Mortal Agony of Christ. There is also a Russian Orthodox chapel on the way to the crematorium. All these constitute the memorial sites present at the Dachau concentration camp today.

The 12 years of ordeal of the remaining prisoners (over 30,000) at the Dachau concentration camp came to an in the year 1945 when the US army troops came to their rescue. This was just a week before the end of World War II in Europe.

By the end of the tour you are filled with remorse and you nearly wish something could have been done to save those innocents who were brutally murdered without a second thought.

This visit opened my eyes to an aspect of human behavior which I never thought was possible. The very fact that the entire town of Dachau knew of this camp & no one ever objected to the goings on is something not easy to digest for someone like me. Hope we never repeat any of these mistakes which humanity has suffered once.
